Environmental
policies
BPI
will handle raw materials in an environmentally safe manner to prevent
harmful discharges to the environment. Environmental discharges
typically occur by the following means: dusting, spills, or leaching
of harmful ingredients through contact with water. These will be
discussed as individual items below, along with disposal and disclosure
information.
Discharge
of material to the atmosphere through dusting
In the handling of fine powders, or in crushing coarse aggregate
that may create fine powder during processing, or in drying and
blending operations involving fine powders, it is possible to discharge
raw materials to the environment through dusting. BPI requires that
adequate dust collectors be employed in processing of fine raw materials
to prevent undesirable discharges to the atmosphere. BPI further
requires that this dust collector fraction which is collected in
a bag house be saved and marked for recycle by BPI.
Contamination
through leaching
BPI requires that most raw materials be stored under roof in a dry
condition. In situations where the material is an inert raw
material, outside storage may be permitted.
Disposal
of Raw Materials
It will be BPI's corporate policy to avoid the disposal or landfill
of any by-product production raw material other than normal office waste or
packaging waste that is collected by municipalities. In cases where
an undesirable fraction of raw material is produced through processing,
BPI will request that this undesirable fraction be returned to the
generator of the raw material as a condition of handling that particular
item. To date BPI has not disposed of any production by-product materials
into landfills.
Disclosure
BPI will handle all raw materials in an open and responsible manner.
This includes full disclosures of MSDS sheets and other relevant
analytical information to subcontractors who handle these raw materials.
This also includes disclosure to generators of material that BPI
may purchase such that these generators are aware of how the material
is being handled, and the end markets where these raw materials
will go. |
